Beetlejuice

I’ve never been into really scary or horror films, so a lot of Halloween classics like “Scream” and the “Halloween” series were never my jam, but “Beetlejuice” is my speed though - ghoulish and creepy, but fun and silly at the same time.  I remember watching it with my family as a kid - it’s one of my mom’s favorite spooky season movies, so it has a lot of nostalgic appeal for me. Mama put us on to Tim Burton films early - she was heavy into Edward Scissorhands as well.

With the recent re-release of Beetlejuice, we figured this would be a great time to showcase this spooky custom pair. I wanted a design that would be relevant and impressive, but also have elements that DIY guests could realistically execute if they wanted to recreate.

Having seen the original movie many times, I knew that Beetlejuice’s iconic striped suit would make a perfect design element that would demonstrate a manageable DIY idea. Looking at the movie poster gave me the idea for purple sky ombre with star twinkles. I specialize in hand-painted typography so wanted to replicate the “Beetlejuice” movie title font as well.

The sandworm tied the pair together by including the black-and-white stripes on the 2nd shoe in a different way… and let me show off my character drawing skills without committing to a whole portrait. Characters are always challenging, but satisfying to pull off. I hit the inner panel with some Kicasso signature splatter and found the perfect green lace to pop off the black tongue. Boom: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
